How to Stop the Cycle of Brokenness

It is said and has been proven time and again, that hurt people hurt people.

Perhaps our bodies bare wounds inflicted by the hand of another.

Or, our souls bleed, slashed by words used as a sword cutting deep.

Somewhere along the line–years or hours ago–we may have been used, abused, or betrayed.

Someone hurt us deeply.

Left untended, these wounds will fester. In time, our pain can grow so big that it spills out in misplaced anger or bitterness, landing on those around us. Because of our own hurt, we hurt the innocent who goes on to hurt another.

This is the perpetual cycle of brokenness.

How do we stop the pattern?

By trying harder?

Through more determination?

No. We cannot stop the cycle of brokenness through the strength of our will.

We need help.

There is really only one solution that will break the generational patterns of brokenness.

His name is Jesus.

He was wounded too. He was innocent, yet willingly suffered more than any of us could begin to understand–so that through Him, we might become healed and whole.

His wounds didn’t go on to hurt us; they heal us.

The cycle of brokenness can be stopped with one choice, in one moment of surrender to Him.

He and He alone holds the power to heal every wound, big or small.

Because He suffered the cross, we can be healed.

Because we have suffered ourselves, we can enter into the pain of another.

And when we see our hurts through this lens, suddenly our pain serves a greater purpose. Once we have found healing, we can grasp the hand of the one who has not, and draw them toward the One who can end the cycle of hurts.

It stops now.

The cycle ends with Jesus.

Now, no longer will we be hurt people hurting people…no, now we will be whole people healing people, through the grace of God.

“…and by His wounds, we are healed.”

Isaiah 53
